The setting of Sedella and other areas of interest closeby: Sedella is set in the Andalucian region of North East Axarquia
and is the highest village sitting in the mountain region of the Sierra Tejedas. Fantastic views are afforded of the peak of La Maroma, the highest, in the range and from here on a clear day you can see the Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Mount Maroma The abundance of wild flowers within this countryside and the vistas of the sea set against the backdrop of a deep blue sky make this an undiscovered paradise on earth - a perfect place to inspire the artist's canvas! The protection from the mountain, gives Sedella a mild climate, with low humidity and ideal temperatures for walking in the Spring and Autumn. Sedella is situated east of Malaga yet only 1 hour's drive from the airport, 30 minutes drive from the coast and 45 minutes from Nerja with its beautiful beaches, coves and winding streets. Sedella is the perfect location if you are looking for peace and tranquility, the ideal place to unwind and relax and to reconnect with the beauty of nature. There are spectacular views in all directions surrounded by mule tracks. The area can be explored by mountain bike, horseback, 4x4, or on foot.
Afternoon siesta outside Bar Plaza in Sedella. Sedella is one of the 31 towns and villages that make up the Ruta Mudejar in the Axarquia and is a typical Moorish village filled with Mudejar architecture and winding streets. Sedella has about 600 inhabitants known as Sedellanos and on those warm balmy evenings the village is alive with residents sitting in the doorways, chatting to each other across the narrow streets. The friendliness of the local people exudes as you make your way through the village and visit the bars. Facilities in Sedella Sedella has several bars bustling with noisy Spanish conversation and the locals enjoy in engaging with visitors (you will need to know some basic Spanish). There 5 bars, 3 restaurants in the village ( one of which is owned by a local goat herder and specialises in kid and lamb, reviews about the meat are fantastic), 3 village shops, chemist, bank and Post Office; these supply the daily essentials. Fish, fresh bread and vegetables are freshly delivered to the Plaza on various days. The history of Sedella The history of Sedella goes back to pre-historic times. The origin of the town's name is derived from the Latin "sedilia", which means "emplacement or rural possession." There have been other names: the oldest documentary evidence is "Villa del Castillo", The name "Sedille", dating from the 7th century appears on a map of the diocese ordered to be made by the Visigoth King Wamba. Later, the Malaga bishop Teodulpo refers to the town in an Episcopal address as "Sedilia". Following the Christian conquest in 1487, the place was called "Xedalia". But the final word on the town's name comes from Queen Isabal herself, during the re-conquest: a fierce battle between Moors and Christians in the area known as the Arroyo de la Matanza. When informed of the battle, the queen replied: "Se de ella" (I know about it). FIESTAS The most popular festival in Sedella is The Festival of San Anton, the patron saint of the animals, whose feast-day falls on January 17, the festival begins with mass, and following the blessing of the horses, the procession begins. Until quite recently, the pig of San Anton was brought through the streets in procession. The Day of Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza takes place during the first fortnight in August. Another important festival date in Sedella is Corpus Christi, and as in all of Andalucia, Holy Week is a festival that draws crowds from far and near. While the older people are at mass on Easter Sunday, the young people gather all the animals and plants they find on their way into the square.

Local herbs are used extensively in stews and casseroles. Some of the dishes, like the special Holy Week stew, are cooked on specific occasions, and cod is a popular fish dish. Local wines, available in the local shops and bars, are always taken with meals here. The excellent pastries made in Sedella reflect its Moorish past, and although available all year around, they are especially popular at festival.
